What should you know about swollen warm hands?

Warmth happens when blood flow and inflammatory activity increase in the tissues. It can follow a sprain, a cut, a burn, or overuse. Rheumatoid arthritis can present with warm, tender, swollen hand joints and stiffness. A distal radius fracture may cause warmth and swelling near the wrist after trauma. Infection becomes more concerning when warmth is paired with spreading redness, worsening pain, drainage, or fever. Compare both hands and check whether the heat is local or affects the whole hand.

The appearance does not establish a diagnosis. A clinician may check the skin, joints, circulation, sensation, and range of motion, and may recommend imaging or other tests based on the history.

Remove rings and bracelets, keep the hand elevated, and avoid heat if the area is already hot and inflamed. Rest from strenuous use. For a recent minor injury, a cool pack wrapped in cloth may ease discomfort for short periods. Keep any wound clean and covered. Do not squeeze blisters or apply leftover antibiotics. Arrange prompt review if warmth persists, movement becomes difficult, or swelling is increasing.

Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, pus, red streaks, numbness, colour change, or inability to move the fingers. Emergency help is needed for sudden hand swelling with breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips or face. After a fall, marked deformity or loss of sensation may indicate a significant injury.

Ask whether the warmth appears to come from a joint or skin infection, whether you need imaging or laboratory tests, and how to move and protect the hand. Tell the clinician about wounds, bites, injections, new medicines, and joint symptoms elsewhere.
