Swelling inside the upper mouth

The inner upper lip and palate can react to a bite, sharp tooth, hot food, dental appliance, injection, or new oral product. A blocked gland, mouth ulcer, or infection may create a local lump or sore area. Sudden swelling affecting the lips or mouth can also be angioedema, a deeper swelling that sometimes accompanies an allergic reaction. Note whether the area is soft or firm, painful or itchy, and whether there is a wound, fever, rash, or recent dental work.

Choose cool or lukewarm foods and drinks, and avoid spicy, acidic, very salty, or hot items while the lining is irritated. Rinse gently with water after eating and avoid biting, rubbing, or testing the swollen area. Do not pierce a lump or put unprescribed creams inside the mouth. Contact a dentist or clinician if a sharp tooth, appliance, injection, or procedure may be responsible. Keep a list of new medicines and foods if the change was sudden.

Call emergency services for difficulty breathing or swallowing, tongue or throat swelling, drooling, a muffled voice, widespread hives, or faintness. Seek same-day medical or dental advice for rapidly worsening swelling, fever, pus, severe pain, dehydration, or swelling after dental treatment. A lump or sore that does not settle, repeatedly returns, or interferes with eating should be examined.
