Swollen upper lip treatment: what to know

Swelling may follow a new food, medicine, lip product, dental material, insect bite, injury, or infection. It can also occur as angioedema, a deeper swelling of the skin that may affect the lips and face. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Tell a clinician whether the change appeared suddenly, feels itchy or painful, has blisters or pus, or followed an injection or dental procedure.

Stop any newly introduced lip balm, cosmetic, toothpaste, food, or medicine until a clinician advises you about it. Rinse the mouth gently if a product may have irritated it, and use a cool compress on the outside of the lip for short periods. Do not squeeze, pierce, or apply steroid or antibiotic creams inside the mouth. A clinician may recommend an antihistamine for an allergic pattern, or another treatment when infection, trauma, or a medication reaction is suspected. Keep a record of exposures and medicines.

Call emergency services immediately if swelling reaches the tongue or throat, breathing becomes difficult, your voice changes, you feel faint, or swallowing is hard. These can signal a serious allergic reaction. Arrange prompt medical review for rapidly increasing swelling, fever, spreading redness, severe pain, pus, or swelling after a cosmetic or dental procedure. Even without those signs, ongoing or repeated episodes deserve assessment to identify a trigger and reduce recurrence.
