Swollen Lips Leaking Fluid: What to Know

Clear or straw-coloured moisture can come from irritated, cracked, or blistered skin. Thick yellow or green drainage, increasing warmth, tenderness, crusting, or a bad smell can point toward infection. Blood may follow biting, picking, or a split lip. If rapid swelling occurs with itch, hives, or swelling elsewhere, angioedema is a condition a clinician may consider; the leaking fluid itself does not diagnose it.

Look at whether the fluid comes from one crack, several blisters, or the inner lip, and whether fever, mouth sores, dental pain, or a new product is present. Avoid squeezing the area, which can worsen tissue damage and spread infection.

Wash your hands, rinse the lips gently with clean lukewarm water, and pat dry. Use a clean non-stick dressing if an external split is rubbing, and avoid lipstick, fragranced products, spicy foods, and picking until the skin settles. Do not share towels, lip products, or utensils if blisters or drainage are present. Arrange medical advice before applying antibiotic or steroid creams inside the mouth.

Get emergency help for tongue or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, wheezing, faintness, confusion, or trouble swallowing. Seek prompt care for pus, spreading redness, fever, severe pain, uncontrolled bleeding, eye swelling, or rapidly increasing lip swelling. Arrange an appointment when drainage persists, blisters recur, a wound does not heal, or eating and drinking become difficult.
