Swollen lips with cracked corners: what to know

The mouth corners stay moist from saliva, then become irritated as the skin dries and splits. Lip licking, dehydration, wind, braces, dentures, and friction can contribute. Redness, soreness, crusting, or repeated cracks may also occur with inflammation or infection, which needs an examination rather than guesswork. Swelling across the lip can have a separate cause, including contact irritation, injury, or angioedema. Cracked corners do not by themselves identify the cause of the swelling.

Rinse gently and pat dry after eating. Apply a bland protective ointment to the corners and lips, and avoid licking, picking, fragranced balms, and spicy or acidic foods if they sting. Check that dental appliances fit comfortably. Do not share lip products or use leftover steroid, antibiotic, or antifungal creams without advice. If cracks recur, a clinician may look for contributing skin, dental, nutritional, or medical factors and recommend targeted treatment.

Seek urgent help for tongue or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, trouble swallowing, faintness, or fast progression. Arrange prompt review for pus, spreading redness, increasing warmth, fever, severe pain, blisters, or swelling after a new medicine or food. Make a routine appointment when cracks do not heal, bleed repeatedly, or keep returning despite protecting the skin.
