One-sided swollen lip after biting

A bite concentrates pressure on a small patch of the lip, so swelling can remain clearly on one side. The spot may feel bruised, sting when food touches it, or develop a shallow inner-mouth sore. Swelling can make the same area easier to catch between the teeth, creating a cycle of irritation. A sharp tooth, uneven filling, denture edge, or orthodontic wire can contribute if the problem repeats. One-sided location supports a local explanation, but it does not rule out other causes if the swelling spreads or no bite occurred.

Rinse gently with cool water, then leave the area alone as much as possible. Use a cold pack wrapped in cloth against the outside of that side of the lip for brief applications. Eat soft, cool food and chew on the opposite side; avoid citrus, chilli, salty snacks, and rough textures until the sore settles. Do not bite, scratch, or burst a blister-like bump. If your teeth keep catching the same place, book a dental check to look for an irritating edge or appliance.

Seek emergency help if swelling spreads to the tongue or throat, or if breathing, swallowing, or speaking becomes difficult. Get prompt care for bleeding that does not stop with pressure, a deep cut, a broken or loose tooth, pus, fever, spreading redness, or pain that worsens rather than eases. Contact a clinician if the swelling appeared without a bite, keeps enlarging, or comes with hives; sudden facial swelling can require assessment for angioedema.

Ask whether the bite has caused a deeper wound, whether a tooth or dental device needs adjustment, and which mouth-care products are suitable. Explain which side is affected, when the bite happened, and whether the swelling is changing.
