Swollen lip from biting inside: what to know

Teeth can pinch the soft lining of the lip, causing bruising, a small cut, or a tender raised area. Swelling may become more noticeable after the bite because irritated tissue draws in fluid. A pale or whitish patch can form over a healing mouth wound. Pain with chewing does not by itself show that the injury is serious. Repeated biting in the same place may happen when the area is already puffy or when a sharp tooth, filling, or dental appliance rubs it.

Rinse gently with cool water and check whether bleeding has stopped. Hold a clean cloth against an accessible cut with light pressure. A cold pack wrapped in cloth on the outside of the lip can reduce discomfort; use short applications and protect the skin. Choose cool, soft foods, chew on the other side, and avoid spicy, acidic, crunchy, or very hot foods while the lining is sore. Do not pick at a clot or place household products on the wound. A dentist can smooth a sharp edge if the bite keeps recurring.

Get urgent help if swelling reaches the tongue or throat, breathing or swallowing becomes difficult, the voice changes, or you feel faint. Arrange prompt dental or medical assessment for bleeding that will not stop with steady pressure, a deep or gaping cut, a loose or broken tooth, pus, fever, spreading redness, or pain that is becoming stronger. Sudden lip swelling without a clear bite, especially with hives or facial swelling, may need assessment for angioedema.

Ask whether the wound needs cleaning or closure, whether a tooth edge is causing repeat bites, and what pain relief is suitable for you. Mention when the bite happened, whether the skin was broken, and any medicines or allergies.
