Swollen irritated eye: what to know

Itching and watering often accompany allergy or contact with an irritant such as cosmetics, cleanser, smoke, or dust. A tender bump at the lid edge can involve a blocked gland. Redness with sticky discharge may occur with infection. Deeper swelling reactions can affect the eyelids and may appear suddenly, sometimes alongside facial or lip swelling. Eye discomfort is different from eyelid puffiness. Pain inside the eye, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, or pain when moving the eye should not be managed as simple irritation.

Wash your hands, remove contact lenses, and stop eye makeup or newly used products. Rinse the eye with clean lukewarm water if a surface irritant entered it; do not rub or use someone else’s drops. A cool clean compress over closed lids can soothe mild itch and puffiness. Avoid sharing towels, and arrange review if symptoms keep worsening or do not settle after the suspected irritant is removed.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives. Seek urgent eye assessment for severe pain, reduced vision, marked light sensitivity, injury, chemical exposure, fever with pronounced redness, pus, double vision, or pain with eye movement. A rapidly worsening one-sided swelling also warrants prompt review.

Ask whether the problem affects the eyelid, eye surface, or deeper tissues; whether allergy or infection is likely; which drops are appropriate; and what symptoms should trigger emergency care.
