Swollen face after cold exposure: what to know

Cold air and wind can dry and irritate the skin barrier, causing tightness, redness, stinging, and mild puffiness. A pale, numb, hard, or blistered area after intense exposure needs medical assessment because cold injury can damage tissue. Sun exposure can still injure skin in cool weather; Sunburn may cause warmth, tenderness, swelling, and later peeling or blisters. Facial swelling with nasal symptoms may instead relate to an illness or another cause, so the timing and skin appearance matter.

Move indoors and warm the skin gradually; avoid direct heat, hot water, massage, and rubbing. Cleanse gently, pat dry, and apply a bland moisturiser or Emollient Therapy product without fragrance. Protect the area from further wind and sun, and drink fluids if you are unwell. Do not peel loose skin or break blisters. A clinician should guide the use of medicines such as Topical Corticosteroids, especially on facial skin.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, confusion, severe drowsiness, or widespread blistering. Obtain prompt assessment for numbness that persists, skin that becomes grey, white, blue, or black, severe pain, eye involvement, fever, or signs of infection such as pus and spreading redness. Arrange review if swelling persists, worsens, or follows a significant cold or sun exposure.
