Swollen, crusty lips: what to check

Dry, tight lips can crack and form flakes or a scab after wind, sun, dehydration, or frequent licking. Burning after a new balm, lipstick, toothpaste, or food can indicate contact irritation. Tingling followed by grouped blisters and crusting is a pattern clinicians may recognise as a cold sore. Yellow drainage, increasing warmth, tenderness, or redness can signal infection. Sudden deeper swelling, especially beyond the crusted area, can occur with an allergic reaction or angioedema.

Record new exposures and whether the problem is on the lip surface, at the mouth corners, or inside the mouth. That detail helps separate skin irritation from a sore needing targeted treatment.

Pause new lip products and avoid licking, peeling, or scrubbing the crust. Clean gently with lukewarm water and use a bland outer-lip ointment if comfortable. Avoid sharing cups, towels, or lip products when blisters or drainage are present. A clinician should guide treatment for suspected infection or recurrent blisters; do not use leftover antibiotics or steroid creams without advice.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, wheezing, or difficulty swallowing. Seek prompt review for rapidly worsening swelling, fever, spreading redness, pus, severe pain, extensive blistering, or inability to drink. Arrange a routine appointment if crusting keeps returning or does not settle with gentle protection.
