Swollen Bottom Lip Overnight: What to Know

Overnight swelling can follow sleeping against the lip, accidental biting, dryness, a new balm or toothpaste, or a developing cold sore. Tooth or gum pain, facial warmth, pus, or fever points toward a dental or infectious problem. Sudden swelling after an evening meal, medicine, or product can be Angioedema. The timing is useful, but it cannot identify the cause by itself.

Look for a cut, blister, rash, tooth pain, or swelling inside the mouth without squeezing the area. Stop new lip and facial products, rinse gently, and apply a cool cloth for short periods. Drink fluids and avoid spicy or acidic foods if the skin is broken. Note what you used, ate, or took before sleep and whether the swelling is changing.

Call emergency services for tongue or throat swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, voice change, faintness, or widespread hives. Seek same-day medical or dental advice if swelling is rapidly increasing, severe, hot, very painful, associated with fever or pus, or accompanied by tooth pain. Arrange review if it persists or repeatedly appears overnight.
