Swollen ankle and gout

Gout develops when urate crystals collect in a joint and trigger a strong inflammatory response. The ankle may become swollen, warm, red, and very tender, sometimes with pain that makes a sock or blanket uncomfortable. A flare can begin quickly, but not every swollen ankle is gout. Ankle Sprain or Ankle Fracture is more plausible after a twist or fall, while infection must be considered when fever, a wound, or rapidly spreading redness is present. Ankle Osteoarthritis usually causes activity-related or recurring joint symptoms rather than a sudden hot flare.

Rest the joint, elevate the foot, and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth. Drink normally unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids, and avoid alcohol while symptoms are active. Do not press hard on the joint or start leftover medicines. A clinician can confirm the likely cause, review kidney health and other medicines, and recommend treatment that is safe for you. Keep a record of foods, illness, dehydration, or medicines that preceded the episode without assuming one trigger caused it.

Seek urgent medical assessment for a hot swollen ankle with fever, chills, feeling very unwell, a skin wound, or rapidly worsening pain, because joint infection can damage the joint and needs prompt treatment. Seek emergency help if you cannot move the foot, the ankle is deformed, toes become numb or cold, or symptoms follow a serious injury. Arrange review for a first suspected gout attack or repeated flares.

Ask whether the ankle needs fluid testing, blood tests, or imaging, and which treatment is suitable with your kidney function and current medicines. Mention previous attacks, family history, recent illness, alcohol intake, and any injury or wound near the ankle.
