What should you know about swollen above lip?

A swollen area above the lip may follow a bite, impact, dental problem, irritated skin, cold sore or local infection. New cosmetics, foods or medicines can trigger an allergic response. Angioedema is a deeper swelling of the skin that can affect the lips and may occur with hives or without a visible rash.

The pattern matters: pain, warmth, pus or a spreading red area points more toward inflammation or infection, while sudden painless swelling after an exposure may suggest an allergic mechanism. A clinician may need to examine the mouth, teeth and skin and review recent exposures and medicines.

If the swelling is mild and you otherwise feel well, stop any new product that touched the area and use a cool compress wrapped in cloth. Avoid squeezing, scratching or applying unfamiliar creams. Note when it began, whether it is growing and what you ate, took or applied shortly beforehand.

Arrange medical assessment if the swelling persists, returns, becomes painful or is linked with tooth pain, fever, warmth, pus or a skin wound. A clinician can decide whether you need treatment for an infection, an allergy or another cause; do not take someone else's prescription medicine.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, difficulty swallowing, tongue swelling, dizziness, faintness or rapidly worsening facial swelling. These signs can accompany a serious allergic reaction. Do not wait to see whether the swelling settles, and do not drive yourself if breathing or faintness is affected.
