Swelling on the Right Knee: What to Know

The right-sided location mainly tells you which knee is affected; it does not identify the diagnosis. Swelling after a twist may occur with an ACL injury or meniscus tear. Gradual aching and stiffness can fit knee osteoarthritis, while a painful, hot flare can occur with gout. Knee bursitis affects a cushioning sac near the joint. A Baker's cyst usually causes fullness behind the knee. A clinician will consider timing, movement, warmth, injury, and whether other joints are involved.

Temporarily reduce impact exercise, stairs, deep squats, and movements that increase pain. Rest with the leg supported and try a wrapped cold pack for short intervals. Keep the knee gently moving within a comfortable range, unless a clinician has told you to immobilize it. Note when swelling began, whether it changes during the day, and any injury or fever; these details help the examination.

Seek urgent care if the knee is hot and red with fever, you cannot bear weight, the joint looks deformed, pain is severe after an injury, or the lower leg or foot becomes numb, pale, or cold. Arrange review for swelling that persists, returns, locks the knee, or interferes with ordinary walking.

Ask what the examination suggests, whether the left knee should be compared, and whether imaging or joint aspiration is needed. Ask for safe activity limits, symptom relief options, and a clear timeframe for follow-up.
