Swelling on the hand after an insect bite: what to know

A bite may cause a raised, itchy, warm area around the spot, with swelling that extends across the hand because the tissues are close together. Pain, increasing warmth, pus, a red streak, or fever can suggest infection rather than a simple local reaction. A bite may also be coincidental to another cause of hand swelling, such as an injury or inflammatory condition. If the hand becomes very tight, movement and circulation can be affected, so changes in colour, sensation, or finger movement matter.

Wash the area gently with soap and water, remove rings and bracelets, and use a wrapped cool pack for short periods. Keep the hand raised and avoid scratching; clean, trimmed nails reduce skin damage. Ask a pharmacist about an appropriate treatment for itch or pain, especially if you take other medicines, are pregnant, or have a long-term condition. Do not cut, squeeze, or try to remove material from the skin unless it is clearly visible and can be brushed away safely.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, widespread hives, or rapidly developing symptoms after a bite. Seek urgent medical advice for severe hand pain, blue or pale fingers, numbness, inability to move, rapidly spreading redness, pus, or fever. Arrange a review if swelling is worsening, lasts beyond the expected local reaction, or keeps recurring.
