Swelling Below the Knee Cap: What to Know

Knee bursitis can cause a local, tender swelling over the front of the knee, particularly after repeated kneeling or pressure. Knee osteoarthritis may cause broader joint swelling and stiffness. Gout can make the knee suddenly hot, red, and very painful. A meniscus tear or ACL tear may follow a twist and can bring catching, instability, or swelling during activity. A Baker's Cyst usually sits behind the knee, but symptoms may be felt around the whole joint. Similar patterns overlap, so a clinician uses the history and examination rather than location alone.

Avoid kneeling, impact, deep squats, and twisting while they provoke symptoms. Rest with the leg supported and apply a cold pack through a cloth for short periods. Gentle straightening and bending can maintain mobility if comfortable; do not push through sharp pain or a blocked movement. Persistent swelling, repeated episodes, or reduced walking ability warrants an assessment. Joint Aspiration may be considered by a clinician when fluid needs testing or relief.

Get urgent medical advice for fever with a hot red knee, severe sudden pain, inability to bear weight, or a knee that locks. A painful swollen calf, new numbness or weakness, a cold or pale foot, or rapidly increasing swelling also requires prompt assessment. If symptoms are milder, arrange a routine appointment when they persist or interfere with everyday movement.
