Signs of SVC obstruction

The superior vena cava is a large vein returning blood from the upper body to the heart. When it is compressed or blocked, pressure can build in veins above the blockage. You might notice puffiness around the eyes on waking, a tight collar feeling, swollen arms, prominent veins on the neck or chest, headaches, dizziness, cough, breathlessness or a hoarse voice. Symptoms can vary with posture and may worsen when lying flat.

One sign alone cannot identify the cause. A chest mass, lymphoma, a clot or another condition can produce similar effects. A clinician may examine the neck and chest, check breathing and arrange imaging to see the vein and nearby structures.

Tell your cancer team or doctor promptly about new swelling above the waist, breathing changes, head pressure or visible chest veins. Note when the change started and whether it is worse when bending or lying down. Rest with your head and chest raised if that eases symptoms, and do not alter prescribed treatment without advice. The next step may involve urgent imaging and treatment directed at the cause.

Call emergency services for sudden severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, blue lips, inability to speak in full sentences, new severe headache or rapidly worsening facial swelling. These symptoms can signal a serious effect on breathing or circulation. New but stable signs still warrant prompt medical contact.
