What should you know about surgical laminectomy?

Short answer
A surgical laminectomy removes part of a vertebra to relieve pressure on spinal nerves or the spinal cord when symptoms and imaging support decompression.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Target
- Compressed spinal nerves or spinal cord
- Main action
- Creates more space by removing part of the lamina
- Planning
- Based on symptoms, examination, imaging, and health
What the operation involves
The lamina is the bony plate at the back of a vertebra. Removing some or all of it can enlarge the space around compressed nerves. The surgeon may also remove other tissue contributing to narrowing, and may combine decompression with stabilisation when the spine needs additional support.
Laminectomy may be considered for problems such as spinal stenosis or selected cases of vertebral slippage. It is not chosen from a scan alone: symptoms, examination findings, imaging, general health, and previous treatment all shape the decision.
Preparing for recovery
Share your medicines, allergies, smoking or vaping history, and any change in leg or arm strength with the surgical team. Arrange help with meals, transport, and early household tasks. After surgery, walk as instructed, protect the incision, and complete the prescribed exercises without forcing painful movement.
Recovery varies with the spinal level and whether fusion or another procedure is added. Ask when you may sit, drive, work, lift, shower, and return to sport rather than using another patient’s timeline.
When to seek care
Call your surgical team for a wound that becomes increasingly red, swollen, painful, or leaky, or for fever or pain that is not controlled by the plan. Seek urgent care for new or rapidly worsening weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, or severe breathing difficulty.
Questions for your surgeon
Ask which nerve is being decompressed, what portion of bone will be removed, whether stabilisation is also planned, and what improvement is realistic for pain, walking, strength, or sensation. Ask about alternatives such as endoscopic spine surgery and the signs that require an urgent call.

Questions people ask
Is laminectomy the same as spinal fusion?
No. Laminectomy removes bone to decompress nerves. Fusion uses implants and bone graft to stabilise selected spinal segments; both may be planned together.
Will laminectomy cure every cause of back pain?
No. It is aimed at pressure-related symptoms, and outcomes depend on the source of symptoms and the condition of the nerves and spine.
