What should you know about a surgery compression bra?

This soft, close-fitting garment is designed for the early recovery period after breast surgery. It usually has broad, gentle support and may avoid pressure across an incision. The right design depends on the operation, dressing, drains, breast shape, and your surgeon’s instructions.

Compression should feel supportive rather than sharply tight. Numbness, increasing pressure, chafing, or changes in skin colour can signal that the garment needs review. A compression bra does not treat infection or replace wound care.

Ask when to put it on, how long to wear it, and whether it should be removed for bathing or sleep. Follow the prescribed washing instructions so the fabric stays clean and keeps its shape. Keep the incision and drain sites dry as directed, and check the skin each time the bra is removed.

Choose a size recommended by your clinical team rather than sizing down for extra compression. If swelling changes the fit, contact the team before changing to a tighter garment. A specialist may also discuss compression garments and lymphoedema therapy if arm or chest swelling continues.

Contact your surgical team promptly for spreading redness, warmth, pus-like drainage, wound separation, fever, or pain that is getting worse. Remove or loosen the bra and seek advice if it causes marked numbness, blue or pale skin, blistering, or difficulty breathing. Sudden chest pain or severe breathlessness needs emergency care.
