What should you know about super swollen face?

Swelling may affect the cheeks, eyelids, lips or tongue and can develop suddenly or gradually. It can follow a food, medicine, insect sting, contact exposure, infection, injury or dental problem. Angioedema commonly presents with sudden swelling beneath the skin, often around the lips or eyes, and may occur with hives. Facial swelling is a symptom, not a diagnosis, so the pattern and timing matter. Swelling with redness, warmth, pain or fever may point toward infection and needs medical review.

Stop using a new cosmetic or suspected trigger and record what happened before the swelling began. Keep your head raised and use a cool compress if it is comfortable. Do not apply unfamiliar creams to swollen skin. If a clinician has given you an emergency plan for a previous allergic reaction, follow that plan. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint, confused or short of breath.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing or swallowing, wheezing, hoarseness, faintness, confusion or rapidly worsening swelling. Prompt medical assessment is also needed for facial swelling with severe pain, fever, eye pain, vision changes or a spreading red area. Even if symptoms improve, a first sudden episode should be discussed with a clinician.
