What should you know about super sore throat?

A sore throat reflects irritation or inflammation in the throat and nearby tissues. A common cold, influenza, COVID-19, or allergic rhinitis can bring throat discomfort with cough, congestion, sneezing, or fever. Tonsillitis may cause swollen tonsils and painful swallowing; strep throat can cause a sudden painful throat and fever without the typical cough. Glandular fever may bring profound tiredness and swollen glands. Acid reflux can irritate the throat, especially after meals or when lying down. These patterns overlap, so symptoms alone do not establish the cause.

Sip fluids, choose soft foods, and rest your voice. Warm drinks or cool foods may soothe the throat; avoid smoke and other irritants. Follow the label or a clinician’s advice for suitable pain relief, and do not share antibiotics or use them without assessment. Wash hands and avoid close contact while fever or respiratory symptoms are present. A clinician may examine your throat and decide whether testing is needed.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing neck or throat swelling, a muffled voice, or severe one-sided throat pain with difficulty opening the mouth. Seek medical advice if dehydration, persistent fever, a rash, marked weakness, or worsening symptoms develops. Arrange review when a sore throat does not settle or repeatedly returns.
