Symptoms do not show whether the bacteria are antibiotic-resistant; laboratory testing and the response to prescribed treatment help clinicians assess that question. Untreated infection may spread and cause pelvic inflammatory disease or inflammation in other parts of the body.

Arrange STI screening promptly if you have symptoms, a sexual partner with gonorrhoea, or a recent exposure. Tell the clinician about recent antibiotics, sexual sites involved, allergies and medicines. Testing may use urine or swabs from the throat, vagina, cervix or rectum, depending on contact. Avoid sex until a clinician says it is safe, and do not share leftover antibiotics or stop a prescribed course early. Current or recent partners may need assessment as well.

Seek urgent medical help for severe pelvic or lower abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, a painful swollen testicle, a widespread rash with joint pain, eye pain or vision changes, or difficulty swallowing or breathing. These features can signal infection beyond a straightforward genital infection or another condition needing prompt treatment. If symptoms continue after treatment, contact the prescribing clinic rather than taking another antibiotic yourself.
