What should you know about sunken eye bags?

A hollow beneath the lower eyelid can create a dark shadow and make nearby fat pads look more prominent. True puffiness may come from fat bulging, fluid retention, or loose eyelid skin. Droopy eyelids and tear trough hollows can therefore contribute different parts of the same appearance.

Lighting, allergies, sleep disruption, dehydration, ageing, and inherited anatomy may change how noticeable the area looks. Dark colour does not always mean the skin is thinner, and a photograph alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether the appearance changes with allergies, sleep, rubbing, or morning fluid retention, and avoid rubbing the delicate skin. A clinician can assess the eyelid skin, fat position, hollows, pigmentation, and tear drainage before suggesting care. Under-eye filler may suit selected hollows; eyelid surgery may be considered when excess skin or bulging fat is the main issue.

Use only products intended for the eye area, introduce one change at a time, and stop anything that causes burning or swelling.

Arrange medical review for new one-sided swelling, pain, redness, discharge, a rash, or vision changes. Seek urgent care for sudden swelling with breathing difficulty, severe eye pain, double vision, or loss of vision. Gradual cosmetic change is not an emergency, but persistent change still merits a diagnosis.
