What should you know about sunburn white skin?

A sunburn injures the outer skin and can leave dry scales that look pale or white as they lift away. Areas that peel may contrast with surrounding redness or with skin that has tanned. After inflammation settles, pigment can also look uneven for a while. The appearance alone cannot show how deep the injury is or identify its cause.

Sunburn commonly presents with skin redness, warmth, tenderness, and later peeling. Blisters indicate more substantial skin injury. White patches that were present before the burn, continue to expand, or have a sharp pattern deserve an assessment because another pigment or skin condition may be involved.

Move out of direct sun, use cool damp compresses, and keep the area gently moisturised with a bland emollient. Wash with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, then pat dry. Do not scrub, pull peeling skin, or break blisters. Protect the area with clothing and broad-spectrum sunscreen once the skin can tolerate products; reapply as directed on the label.

Avoid fragranced products, exfoliating acids, and retinoids on irritated skin. Drink fluids and use simple pain relief only if it is normally safe for you. A clinician may discuss treatment for marked inflammation, but topical corticosteroids should not be started on broken or infected skin without advice.

Seek prompt medical advice for extensive blistering, severe pain, increasing swelling, pus, spreading warmth, fever, dizziness, vomiting, confusion, or trouble keeping fluids down. Get urgent help for facial swelling affecting breathing, fainting, or signs of heat illness. Arrange a dermatology review if pale areas persist after the burn has healed, recur without sun exposure, or are changing.

Ask whether the pale areas are peeling skin or a pigment change, whether any product should be stopped, and how to protect the area while it recovers. Ask what symptoms would suggest infection or a deeper burn.
