Sunburn: what to do

Short answer
After sunburn, get out of the sun, cool the skin, moisturise gently, replace fluids and watch for blistering or illness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Do first
- Leave direct sun and cool the affected skin.
- Monitor
- Blisters, fever, dizziness and worsening pain.
What you may notice
Sunburn causes inflammation in ultraviolet-exposed skin. It can feel warm, tight, itchy or sore, with [Skin Redness](/symptoms/skin-redness/) followed by [Peeling Skin](/symptoms/skin-peeling/). Blisters mean the injury is more substantial and should be left intact. Skin may look different as it recovers, but more sun exposure adds injury rather than helping it heal. Learn more about [Sunburn](/conditions/sunburn/).
Immediate care
Go indoors or into shade and cool the area with a shower or damp cloth. Pat dry and apply a fragrance-free moisturiser; [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) can be discussed for persistent dryness. Drink fluids, wear loose clothing and avoid rubbing, scrubbing, peeling or opening blisters. Keep the area covered from direct sunlight while it heals. Check medicine labels or ask a pharmacist before taking pain relief, especially if you have kidney, stomach, bleeding or pregnancy concerns.
When to seek care
Get medical advice for extensive [Skin Blisters](/symptoms/skin-blisters/), severe pain, increasing swelling, fever, chills, vomiting, dizziness, fainting or difficulty keeping fluids down. Seek urgent help for confusion, breathing difficulty, severe weakness, eye pain or vision changes. Worsening warmth, pus or tenderness may indicate infection. A clinician can advise whether treatment, including [Topical Corticosteroids](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-corticosteroids/), is appropriate.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how deep the burn appears, how to protect any blister, which moisturiser or pain reliever fits your health history, and when you can resume outdoor activities. Tell them the timing of exposure and any symptoms beyond the skin.

Questions people ask
Is a cold shower helpful for sunburn?
A cool shower can soothe heat and discomfort; avoid very cold water and direct ice, which may further irritate injured skin.
Should I cover a sunburn?
Use loose, soft clothing to shield it from sunlight and friction, without trapping heat against the skin.
