Sunburn scar on the face: what to know

Sunburn can inflame facial skin and leave redness, uneven pigment or a change in texture after the acute soreness improves. A flat colour change is often different from a scar, which involves altered skin structure such as a depression or raised area. Blistering and picking increase the chance of a longer-lasting texture change.

Use a gentle cleanser, cool water and a bland moisturiser. Avoid picking, peeling, scrubs, fragranced products and strong active ingredients while the barrier is tender. Keep the face out of direct sun with a hat or shade, and use suitable protection on intact skin.

Do not start lightening creams, steroid products, peels or devices without professional advice, particularly near the eyes. A dermatologist can decide whether the concern is active inflammation, post-inflammatory colour change or textural scarring, then discuss options such as emollient therapy or another targeted approach.

Seek prompt care for painful eye symptoms, marked facial swelling, extensive blisters, pus, rapidly spreading redness, fever or feeling faint. Arrange a routine dermatology review if a mark is indented, raised, itchy, painful, changing, or persists after the skin has otherwise recovered.

Ask whether the mark is pigment, redness or scar tissue; which skincare ingredients to stop; how to protect it outdoors; and whether treatment could irritate your skin tone or worsen pigmentation. Mention any blistering or picking during healing.
