Sunburn rash on the face

Facial sunburn may cause diffuse redness, warmth, tightness, tenderness and later peeling. Swelling can be more noticeable around the eyelids, nose and lips. Small fluid-filled areas are [Skin Blisters](/symptoms/skin-blisters/) and should not be popped. Other facial rashes can look similar, so a persistent or unusual pattern may need examination. Move out of direct sun and use a cool, damp cloth briefly; do not put ice directly on the face. Rinse with lukewarm or cool water, pat dry and apply a bland, fragrance-free emollient away from the eyes. Pause scrubs, peels, retinoids, fragranced products and makeup that stings. Do not pick peeling skin or open blisters. Wear a hat and use shade while the face heals. Ask a clinician before using steroid cream near the eyelids; [Topical Corticosteroids](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-corticosteroids/) are not suitable for every facial rash.

Obtain prompt medical advice for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision, marked eyelid swelling, facial blistering, worsening pain or redness spreading beyond the burned skin. Fever, pus, dizziness, vomiting, confusion or difficulty drinking can signal a more serious problem. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips or tongue.

Ask whether the rash is consistent with sunburn, which cleanser and moisturiser are appropriate, whether a medicine or cosmetic increased sensitivity, and when to restart your usual facial routine.
