What the skin needs
Sunburn disrupts the outer barrier, so products that are normally comfortable may sting temporarily. The safest starting point is a short ingredient list and a cream or ointment texture that reduces water loss. Redness, tenderness, warmth and [Skin Peeling](/symptoms/skin-peeling/) can occur as the injury settles. Learn more about [Sunburn](/conditions/sunburn/).
Choosing and using products
Cool the skin first, then pat it dry and apply a fragrance-free emollient such as a simple cream or ointment. Test a small intact area before applying a new product widely. Avoid perfume, essential oils, exfoliating acids, retinoids, harsh cleansers and products that contain alcohol if they sting. Do not apply products to open blisters unless a clinician advises you. Keep sprays away from the eyes and avoid rubbing them into tender skin. A doctor may consider [Topical Corticosteroids](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-corticosteroids/) for selected inflammation.
When products are not enough
Get medical advice for large or deep-looking burns, extensive [Skin Blisters](/symptoms/skin-blisters/), spreading redness, increasing pain, pus or fever. Dizziness, fainting, vomiting, confusion, inability to drink, eye pain or vision changes require prompt assessment. Stop a product and seek advice if swelling, hives or breathing symptoms develop.
Useful questions
Ask which moisturiser texture suits the affected area, whether an ingredient could be causing contact irritation, how to care for broken blisters, and when sunscreen can be used again on healing skin.

Questions people ask
Is aloe vera always suitable for sunburn?

Can you use moisturiser on peeling sunburn?
Yes, a bland emollient can reduce dryness and friction. Apply gently and do not pull away loose flakes.
