What should you know about sunburn into tan?

How the structures involved in Sunburn differ from normal

Short answer

A tan developing after sunburn is still a response to ultraviolet injury and does not make the earlier burn safe or protect skin from more damage.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

A tan means
The skin has responded to ultraviolet exposure
It does not mean
The burn is healed or future exposure is harmless
Protective care
Cover, seek shade, and protect exposed skin

Why burned skin may darken

After ultraviolet exposure, pigment-producing cells can make the skin look darker while inflammation from the burn settles. The colour change may sit beside redness, tenderness, peeling, or blisters, and different areas can heal unevenly. A tan is not a reliable sign that the skin barrier has repaired itself. Repeated tanning and burning contribute to sun-damaged skin over time. Learn more about [Sunburn](/conditions/sunburn/) and [Sun-Damaged Skin](/conditions/photoaging/).

How to care for the skin

Stop intentional tanning while the skin is sore, warm, peeling, or blistered. Cool the area gently, moisturise intact skin, drink fluids, and wear loose clothing that does not rub. Leave blisters intact and let loose skin come away naturally. Once outside again, use shade, covering clothing, and sunscreen on exposed skin; reapply as directed on the product label. [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) can be discussed when dryness or tightness persists.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment for large or numerous blisters, severe pain, swelling, pus, spreading redness, or a burn that is not settling. Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, or painful eyes and vision changes. Ask before using [Topical Corticosteroids](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-corticosteroids/) on a significant burn, particularly if skin is broken.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the darker colour fits normal healing, how to protect unevenly healing areas, and whether a medicine or skin product could be increasing sensitivity. Discuss persistent colour change, recurrent burns, or a mole or patch that changes independently of the burn.

Questions people ask

Does tanning heal a sunburn?

No. Darkening can occur while the skin is still recovering from ultraviolet injury.

Should I tan again to even the colour?

Avoid more intentional ultraviolet exposure; it can prolong injury and worsen uneven pigmentation.
