Short answer

A sunbed sunburn is ultraviolet skin injury that can cause redness, heat, tenderness, peeling, or blisters and needs careful cooling and monitoring.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Do first
Cool the skin gently and stop further ultraviolet exposure.
Do not
Pop blisters or apply ice directly.

What happens to the skin

A burn may become more noticeable after the exposure, with warmth, redness, tightness, soreness, or swelling. More significant injury can lead to fluid-filled blisters followed by peeling as damaged surface cells shed. Sunbed exposure also adds to cumulative ultraviolet damage, which can contribute to rough texture and photoaging over time.

Comfort and protection

Move out of ultraviolet exposure and cool the skin with a clean, damp cloth or a lukewarm shower. Apply a bland moisturiser or emollient to intact skin, drink fluids, and wear loose clothing. Leave blisters unbroken and do not pull peeling skin. Avoid ice directly on the skin, fragranced products, further tanning, and vigorous rubbing. A clinician can advise whether a topical corticosteroid is suitable for inflamed areas.

When to seek care

Get medical advice for extensive blistering, severe pain, marked swelling, dizziness, vomiting, fever, confusion, or difficulty drinking. Seek urgent help for breathing trouble, fainting, or swelling involving the mouth or throat. Arrange review if redness spreads, drainage develops, or the burn is not settling. Extra care is needed for children, older adults, and people with conditions or medicines that affect skin healing.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how deep the burn appears, whether broken blisters need a dressing, which emollient is appropriate, and whether any medicine or skin condition could slow healing.

Questions people ask

Should I peel sunburned skin?

No. Let loose skin separate naturally and moisturise the intact surrounding skin without rubbing.

When can I use a sunbed again?

Avoid further tanning while the skin is injured, and discuss safer ultraviolet protection with a clinician if burns recur.
