What should you know about sun spots on ears?

The outer ear and rim are exposed during everyday outdoor activity, even when the face is partly covered. A sun spot is usually a flat tan or brown patch with a smooth surface. The ear may be easy to overlook because hair, glasses or headwear can hide it.

A rough or thickened area may reflect sun-related injury rather than a simple pigment spot. Infection, irritation and other lesions can also affect the ear. Do not rely on colour alone, especially when a mark is unlike the surrounding skin.

Apply sunscreen to the tops, rims and backs of the ears when exposed, and use a hat that shades them. Reapply as directed after sweating or swimming. Check both ears in a mirror and note any spot that is new or changing.

A clinician should confirm the diagnosis before removal. Depending on the finding, skin tone and location, possible discussions may include chemical peel, IPL photofacial, picosecond laser treatment or cryotherapy (lesion removal). Do not cut, freeze or burn an ear mark yourself.

Arrange prompt assessment for a spot that becomes rough, crusted, tender, itchy or ulcerated, or that changes in size, outline or colour. Bleeding, repeated scabbing or a sore that fails to heal are reasons to seek care without waiting for cosmetic treatment.

Ask whether the mark is a sun spot or a rough sun-damaged lesion, whether it needs testing, and how to protect the ear during healing. If removal is discussed, ask about scarring, colour change and keeping treatment away from the ear canal.
