What should you know about sun spots on chest?

The upper chest and décolletage are frequently exposed to sunlight and may develop solar lentigines: flat tan, brown or darker patches with a smooth surface. They can sit among fine lines and other signs of photoaging, making uneven tone more noticeable.

Not every dark chest mark is a sun spot. A healed rash, contact reaction, medication effect or another pigmented lesion can look similar. A mark that stands out from neighbouring spots, has an irregular border or develops scale should be examined.

Use shade, clothing and broad-spectrum sunscreen on the chest whenever it is exposed. Reapply as directed, particularly after swimming or sweating. Keep skin care gentle and avoid aggressive scrubs or unlabelled bleaching mixtures.

For persistent cosmetic concern, get the diagnosis confirmed before choosing treatment. A clinician may discuss chemical peel, IPL photofacial, picosecond laser treatment or cryotherapy (lesion removal). Treatment choice depends on the mark, skin tone and healing response.

Seek a dermatology review for a spot that enlarges, changes colour or outline, becomes raised, crusted, painful or itchy, or bleeds without a clear injury. A sore that does not heal also warrants review. Cosmetic treatment should wait until concerning features have been assessed.

Ask how the spot differs from nearby sun spots, whether it needs monitoring or sampling, and what daily protection is suitable. If treatment is considered, ask about expected redness, downtime and the possibility of temporary lightening or darkening.
