What should you know about sun spots on breast?

Breast skin can receive sunlight through low necklines, swimwear or outdoor activity. A sun spot is generally flat, brown and smooth, and may occur alongside other areas of sun-damaged skin. It is a skin finding, not a diagnosis about breast tissue underneath.

Friction, eczema, a healed rash or changes around the nipple can also alter colour. A mark with an irregular outline, multiple colours, scale, bleeding or persistent tenderness should be assessed rather than assumed to be a sun spot.

Note when you first noticed the mark and take a private reference photograph in consistent lighting. Protect the breast and décolletage from sunlight with clothing, shade and sunscreen on exposed skin. Use gentle, fragrance-free care if clothing or sweat causes rubbing.

A dermatologist can confirm whether treatment is appropriate. Options may include a chemical peel, IPL photofacial, picosecond laser treatment or cryotherapy (lesion removal), selected according to the diagnosis, skin tone and risk of pigment change.

Arrange prompt review if the mark grows, changes shape or colour, becomes thick, scaly, painful, itchy, crusted or bleeds. Also seek assessment for nipple distortion, discharge or a persistent rash involving the nipple, because these features need a broader breast and skin evaluation.

Ask whether the mark is confined to the skin, whether it needs dermoscopic examination, and what changes warrant follow-up. If you are considering removal, ask which option has the lowest likelihood of prolonged irritation or uneven pigmentation for your skin.
