What should you know about sun rash on arm?

Check whether the rash is on the exposed outer arm, beneath a sleeve edge, or where a watch, strap, plant, or skincare product touched the skin. Light-related reactions often favour exposed areas, while contact dermatitis may follow a clear shape or line. Heat and sweat can produce clusters of itchy bumps. Scaling, a ring-like border, crusting, or spread beyond the original area points to other possibilities, including Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Heat Rash, Drug Rash, or Ringworm. One-sided location is useful information but does not establish a diagnosis.

Cover the arm from direct sun with closely woven clothing and choose shade while the skin is irritated. Wash gently with cool or lukewarm water, then pat dry. Use a simple fragrance-free moisturiser on unbroken skin and avoid rubbing, shaving, scrubs, and newly introduced products over the rash. Do not apply strong medicated creams without advice, particularly if the rash is blistered, infected-looking, or near the elbow crease. Take a clear photograph and note recent outdoor time, products, medicines, and friction.

Get urgent help for breathing trouble, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, rapidly worsening illness, or a severe blistering reaction. Contact a clinician promptly if the arm becomes increasingly painful, hot, swollen, or draining, or if you develop fever or red streaks. Arrange an examination when the rash keeps returning, spreads to covered skin, affects a joint's movement, or does not begin settling after avoiding the suspected trigger.

Ask whether the location suggests light sensitivity or contact irritation, and whether any medicine can make skin more reactive to sunlight.
