Sunburn Rash: What to Know

Sunburn often causes warmth, soreness, tightness, or peeling on exposed skin. A rash limited to where a product touched may fit [Contact Dermatitis](/conditions/contact-dermatitis/). Prickly bumps in sweaty areas can occur with [Heat Rash](/conditions/heat-rash/). Itchy scale, sharply defined patches, or a ring-shaped edge may point toward conditions such as [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/), [Psoriasis](/conditions/psoriasis/), or [Ringworm](/conditions/ringworm/). A new medicine can cause a [Drug Rash](/conditions/drug-eruption/), while folds affected by moisture may develop [Intertrigo](/conditions/intertrigo/). [Scabies](/conditions/scabies/) is another cause of intense itch, especially when close contacts itch too. These clues cannot confirm a diagnosis alone.

Leave the sun, cool the skin, and wash gently with lukewarm water. Apply a bland fragrance-free moisturiser and wear loose, breathable clothing. Avoid scratching, exfoliating, fragranced products, and unadvised steroid or antibiotic creams. Note when the rash began, where it appears, recent products or medicines, sweating, and whether anyone else has symptoms. Use shade and sun-protective clothing while the cause is being clarified.

Seek prompt advice for blistering, rapidly spreading rash, facial swelling, severe pain, fever, pus, or skin tenderness that is worsening. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, faintness, confusion, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat. A rash that persists after the skin should have recovered, recurs with sun, or follows a new medicine needs clinical assessment.

Ask which features support sunburn versus dermatitis, infection, heat rash, or a medicine reaction. Tell the clinician about all new products and medicines, and ask what can safely relieve itch without worsening an unidentified rash.
