Sunburn-like rash: what to know

A true sunburn tends to affect exposed skin and may feel hot, sore, or tight. A rash that follows a new cream, fragrance, detergent, or plant may suggest contact dermatitis. Sweat and blocked pores can contribute to heat rash, while atopic dermatitis or psoriasis can flare with irritation. A drug rash may appear after starting or changing a medicine and can involve areas not exposed to sun. Ringworm and scabies have different patterns and may need specific treatment.

Move away from heat and direct sun, rinse off a suspected irritant, and use cool compresses for comfort. Wear loose, breathable clothing and avoid scratching. Do not start several new creams at once, because this can obscure the trigger. Note the rash location, edge, scale, itch, pain, recent products, medicines, illness, and outdoor exposure. A clinician can choose treatment based on the pattern rather than the colour alone.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, rapidly spreading rash, skin peeling, painful blisters, fever, or sores in the mouth or eyes. Arrange a prompt assessment for a rash after a new medicine, or one that is worsening, infected-looking, or not settling after the suspected trigger is removed.
