Sun allergy white spots: what to know

Polymorphic light eruption, also called sun allergy, often causes itchy or prickly bumps after sunlight reaches exposed skin. Spots that look white may instead represent reduced pigment after inflammation, a fungal skin condition, or a naturally uneven response to tanning. The timing, texture, itch, and whether the marks remain visible without sun exposure all help a clinician distinguish these possibilities. Sun sensitivity can be useful background when describing the pattern.

Reduce direct sunlight while the skin settles, use broad protective clothing, and apply a suitable sunscreen to exposed areas. Avoid scratching or trying strong lightening products. A dermatologist may consider a short course of topical treatment; recurring or widespread symptoms may lead to discussion of narrowband UVB phototherapy.

Arrange a clinical assessment if the marks spread, recur after modest exposure, become painful, scale, or fail to settle. Seek prompt care for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, blistering over a large area, fever, or eye involvement. These features need assessment because they can signal a stronger reaction or a different skin problem.
