What should you know about summer stroke?

A stroke interrupts blood flow to part of the brain or causes bleeding there. Warning signs often begin suddenly: one side of the face droops, one arm becomes weak or numb, speech becomes unclear, or the person cannot understand words. Sudden vision trouble, severe imbalance, or a new intense headache can also occur. Heat, dehydration, and illness may add strain, but they should not be used to explain away neurological changes.

Call emergency services immediately and note the time the symptoms began or when the person was last known well. Keep them safe, seated or lying down, and loosen tight clothing. Do not give food, drink, or medicines unless instructed by emergency professionals. Do not drive if an ambulance is available. Do not wait to see whether symptoms improve; even brief symptoms need urgent assessment.

Treat sudden facial weakness, arm weakness, numbness, speech difficulty, confusion, vision loss, or severe imbalance as an emergency. A person with risk factors such as hypertension, atrial fibrillation, or type 2 diabetes should still be assessed urgently if symptoms occur. After emergency care, follow-up may include a GP Consultation, tests, and prevention planning.
