What should you know about a sugar and cholesterol test?

The sugar part may be a fasting glucose test or another glucose measurement, while the cholesterol part is often called a lipid profile. Together, the results can help a clinician look for diabetes, prediabetes, or a pattern of cholesterol that may add to cardiovascular risk.

Blood glucose reflects the amount of sugar in your bloodstream at the time of testing. Cholesterol testing usually includes total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. Each result is considered alongside the others, your medical history, medicines, blood pressure, and other risk factors.

A result outside the expected range does not by itself confirm a diagnosis. Recent illness, food, alcohol, activity, stress, and some medicines can affect measurements. Your clinician may repeat a test or request a different glucose test before deciding what the result means for you.

Check the instructions before the appointment. Some combined tests require fasting, while others do not; follow the laboratory or clinician’s specific advice rather than assuming either way. Ask whether plain water is allowed, and tell the team about medicines or supplements you take.

After the sample, keep a record of the result and the date it was taken. If the result is unexpected, arrange the recommended follow-up. Changes to food, activity, or prescribed treatment should be discussed with a clinician, especially if you already take medicine for diabetes or cholesterol.

Contact your healthcare team promptly if testing shows a markedly abnormal result and you have been asked to attend follow-up, or if you develop unusual thirst, frequent urination, vomiting, confusion, severe weakness, or difficulty breathing.

Seek emergency help for chest pressure, sudden weakness on one side, trouble speaking, or severe shortness of breath. These symptoms need urgent assessment regardless of whether a sugar or cholesterol test has been done.

Ask: Do I need to fast for this test? Which results are outside my target range? Could another illness or medicine have affected the sample? Do I need a repeat glucose test or a full lipid profile? What change should I make first, and when should the results be reviewed?
