Sudocrem for sunburn: what to know

Sunburn is inflammation caused by ultraviolet exposure. Redness, heat, tenderness, tightness, and later Peeling Skin are common features; Skin Blisters indicate a deeper burn. A thick occlusive cream may trap heat or feel uncomfortable on freshly burned skin, and fragrance or other ingredients may irritate already sensitive tissue.

Sun-Damaged Skin is broader than a single sunburn and can accumulate over time. Sudocrem may be unsuitable on broken or blistered skin, so the extent and location of the burn matter more than the brand name.

Move out of direct sun, cool the skin with a tepid shower or cool damp cloth, and drink fluids. Do not apply ice, pop blisters, or peel loose skin. Once the heat has eased and the skin is intact, a simple fragrance-free moisturiser or Emollient Therapy may improve dryness. Cover the area from further sun and use comfortable clothing. Do not use topical corticosteroids unless a clinician specifically recommends them.

Obtain urgent medical help for extensive blistering, severe swelling, confusion, faintness, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, or signs of infection such as spreading redness and pus. Seek prompt advice for burns involving the eyes, face, hands, genitals, or a large area. A clinician can assess whether medical treatment is needed.
