Sudocrem for ringworm: what to know

Ringworm is a contagious fungal infection, despite its name; it is not caused by a worm. It may produce an expanding scaly or itchy rash, sometimes with a clearer centre, but other rashes can look similar. Sudocrem can cover redness and reduce friction without treating the organism, allowing infection to continue unnoticed. Scratching can spread it to nearby skin, and shared towels, clothing, or sports equipment can pass it to others.

Arrange a pharmacist or clinician assessment if ringworm is possible, especially when the rash is on the scalp, face, nails, or a large area. Use the recommended topical antifungal exactly as directed and complete the advised course. Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, and do not share towels, clothing, brushes, or bedding. Wash fabrics regularly and avoid steroid cream unless a clinician specifically tells you to use it, because it can alter the appearance of fungal infection.

Seek prompt medical advice if the rash is spreading, painful, oozing, infected-looking, or not improving with appropriate antifungal care. Assessment is especially important for children, people with reduced immunity, or infection involving the scalp or nails, where oral treatment may be needed. Urgent help is appropriate for rapidly worsening swelling or a serious allergic reaction.
