Sudocrem for itching: what to know

Itching can accompany dry skin, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, hives, psoriasis, scabies, or a skin yeast infection. The rash pattern, timing, location, and whether other household members itch can help a clinician distinguish them. A barrier cream may reduce rubbing on dry or irritated skin, but it will not remove a mite infestation, treat yeast, or control every inflammatory rash. Covering the area can also make changes harder to monitor.

Try a small amount on intact skin and stop if it burns or causes new redness. Keep nails short, use cool compresses, wear loose cotton clothing, and moisturise dry skin with a fragrance-free product. Avoid scratching and strongly scented washes. Do not share towels or bedding if scabies is possible, and arrange assessment rather than repeatedly masking an unexplained itch. Use any prescribed treatment exactly as directed.

Seek medical advice for severe or persistent itching, itch that is worse at night, a rapidly spreading rash, or symptoms affecting several people at home. Prompt review is needed for painful, warm, swollen, crusted, or weeping skin. Emergency care is required for itching with facial swelling, faintness, or trouble breathing.
