What should you know about sudden laryngitis?

Laryngitis may follow a viral illness such as a Common Cold, or irritation from heavy voice use, smoke, dry air, or throat clearing. Acid Reflux can also irritate the voice box, sometimes without obvious heartburn. You may notice a Hoarse Voice, a weak or breathy sound, a tickly cough, throat discomfort, or the need to speak with more effort. The inflammation affects sound production; it does not by itself identify the cause.

Rest your voice by speaking briefly and at a comfortable volume; whispering can also strain the voice. Sip fluids, avoid smoke and other irritants, and use moisture in dry rooms. Do not repeatedly clear your throat. If you have a Sore Throat, choose soft foods and ask a pharmacist whether a suitable simple pain reliever is appropriate for you. Antibiotics do not treat most viral causes, so an assessment is useful before taking them.

Seek urgent care if voice change comes with trouble breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, or rapidly increasing swelling. Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms are severe, keep returning, follow an injury, or do not start improving. A clinician may examine your throat and voice, review reflux or medication triggers, and decide whether further assessment is needed.

Ask what may have triggered the change, whether reflux or a recent infection could be contributing, and how long voice rest should continue. Mention smoking or vaping, occupational voice use, new medicines, swallowing symptoms, and any breathing change.
