What should you know about a sudden bumpy rash on the arms?

Atopic Dermatitis often presents with itch, dryness, and recurring inflamed patches. Contact Dermatitis may follow a new soap, detergent, fragrance, plant, metal, adhesive, or work exposure and usually affects contact areas. Heat Rash can produce small prickly bumps after sweating or occlusion. Drug Rash may begin after a new medicine or dose change and can spread beyond the arms.

Psoriasis may form well-defined, scaly areas. Ringworm can produce an expanding scaly edge, while Scabies often causes intense night-time itch and may affect household contacts. Intertrigo is more likely in skin folds than on an exposed forearm. These clues guide a diagnosis but cannot replace an examination.

Take photographs, record when the rash began, and list new products, foods, medicines, travel, heat, exercise, and contact with anyone itchy. Wash gently, keep the skin cool and dry, and use a plain moisturizer if it does not sting. Avoid scratching, fragranced products, and trying several medicated creams at once. If a medicine may be involved, contact the prescriber promptly for advice before changing essential treatment.

A clinician may inspect the distribution, check for scale or burrows, and decide whether testing or a targeted treatment is needed.

Get emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or a rapidly spreading rash with blistering or peeling. Seek urgent assessment for fever with a painful rash, purple spots that do not fade when pressed, eye or mouth involvement, or marked facial swelling. Arrange routine review if the rash persists, recurs, spreads, or interferes with sleep.

Ask what the bumps most resemble, whether a new exposure or medicine could explain them, and which symptoms would change the urgency. Ask which cleanser, moisturizer, or treatment is appropriate and how long to try it before review.
