Sudden black stool: what should you know?

Stool caused by bleeding may look jet black, sticky, or tar-like and can have a strong unpleasant smell. Bleeding in the stomach or upper intestine can be associated with gastritis, a peptic ulcer, or Helicobacter Pylori infection; these conditions may also cause upper abdominal discomfort, nausea, or indigestion. Gastritis, Helicobacter Pylori Infection, and Peptic Ulcer are possible explanations, not conclusions from colour alone.

Iron tablets, bismuth-containing remedies, and dark foods can also change stool colour without bleeding. The timing, texture, and any other symptoms help a clinician judge the difference.

Notice when the change began, how many bowel movements look black, and whether the stool is sticky or unusually smelly. Make a list of medicines and supplements, including iron, aspirin, or anti-inflammatory painkillers. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice. Arrange prompt medical advice for unexplained black stool, especially if it returns or you feel unwell.

Seek emergency help if black stool comes with vomiting blood or material like coffee grounds, fainting, marked weakness, confusion, severe abdominal pain, breathlessness, or cold clammy skin. These signs can occur when bleeding affects circulation. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint; sit or lie down and ask someone to help.

Ask whether the appearance suggests bleeding, whether your medicines could explain the colour, and which tests may be needed. Tell the clinician about stomach pain, indigestion, vomiting, dizziness, bowel changes, and any previous ulcer or Helicobacter Pylori diagnosis.
