Successful membrane sweep: what to know

During a membrane sweep, a midwife or doctor gently places a finger through the cervix, if it is reachable, and makes a circular movement to separate the membranes from the lower part of the uterus. This may encourage local hormone release and cervical change. The procedure can be uncomfortable, especially when the cervix is closed or high. Light bleeding, period-like cramps, pelvic pressure and irregular tightenings may follow. These effects do not prove that active labour has begun.

Use a maternity pad if you have spotting so you can notice changes, and rest or use the comfort measures your maternity team has approved. Keep track of contractions if they become regular, stronger and closer together. Follow the advice you were given about contacting the unit and about the next sweep or induction plan. If the sweep does not lead to labour, your clinician may discuss repeating it or arranging induction of labour based on your pregnancy and preferences.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for heavy bleeding, severe constant pain, fever, reduced fetal movement, or fluid that may be your waters. Call for advice if contractions are regular and painful or if you are unsure whether fluid is amniotic fluid. A small amount of blood-tinged mucus can occur after a sweep, but bleeding that is more than spotting needs assessment.

Ask: Is my cervix ready for a sweep? What discomfort and bleeding are expected? When should I call the unit? If labour does not start, when will we review induction? Are there reasons a sweep is not suitable for me?
