What should you know about subjective hearing test?

Short answer

A subjective hearing concern describes what you notice, while a hearing test measures how you respond to different sounds.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Audiometry
Measures responses to sounds at different pitches and loudness levels.
Before testing
Record onset, affected ear, noise exposure and associated symptoms.

What hearing testing adds

People may notice muffled speech, difficulty following conversations, tinnitus, a blocked sensation or hearing that varies by situation. An audiologist can examine the ear and use audiometry to record the quietest sounds you detect across pitches. Other checks may assess middle-ear movement or speech understanding. Earwax buildup can affect hearing and may be treatable; inner-ear conditions such as Meniere's disease can cause hearing changes with dizziness or ringing. Your experience remains useful because hearing can be difficult in noise even when a basic result seems reassuring.

Preparing for assessment

Arrange a hearing test if hearing changes persist, affect communication, or follow repeated exposure to loud sound. Write down when the change began, whether one or both ears are affected, and any pain, discharge, ringing or dizziness. Do not put cotton buds or objects into the ear. Bring details of medicines, noise exposure and previous ear problems. The tester will explain the instructions and results, and may recommend review or hearing support.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, especially in one ear, or hearing change with severe dizziness, facial weakness, severe headache or other neurological symptoms. Seek prompt advice for ear pain, discharge, injury or a rapidly worsening change. Gradual hearing difficulty still merits a planned test because untreated communication problems can affect daily life.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which parts of the ear and hearing pathway will be assessed, whether wax or infection could contribute, and what the results mean for each ear. Ask when to repeat testing and which symptoms require urgent review.

Questions people ask

Is a hearing test based only on personal opinion?

No. You describe what you notice, while audiometry and related checks provide measured information about hearing function.

Can earwax affect a hearing result?

Yes. Earwax buildup can muffle sound, so the ear may need examination before results are interpreted.
