What should you know about subcision surgery?

After the skin is cleansed and numbed, a clinician places a fine needle or similar instrument beneath the scar and moves it carefully through the fibrous bands holding the surface down. The release can allow the depression to lift as the area heals. It is generally used for rolling or tethered depressions, not every type of scar.

Temporary swelling, bruising, soreness, firmness, or colour change can occur. The clinician should examine your scar, skin tone, medical history, medicines, and tendency to form raised scars before recommending treatment. Laser treatment may address a different component of acne scarring and can be discussed separately.

Share information about bleeding problems, allergies, active skin infection, previous scar treatments, and medicines or supplements that affect bleeding. Arrange care instructions around the appointment, keep the area clean as directed, and avoid rubbing, picking, or applying unapproved products while it heals. Attend the planned follow-up.

Call the clinic if swelling or pain is increasing instead of settling, redness spreads, the skin becomes hot, or there is pus-like drainage or fever. Get urgent help for breathing trouble, rapidly increasing swelling, or a change in vision.

Ask which scars are being treated, what instrument and anaesthetic are planned, what healing changes are expected, how complications would be handled, and whether another procedure should be staged.
