What do stretch marks mean in pregnancy?

As the abdomen, breasts, hips or thighs grow, deeper support fibres in the skin can change. Pregnancy hormones may also affect how skin responds to stretching. New lines can be pink, red, purple or brown and may itch; with time they commonly become lighter and less noticeable. Their presence does not show whether a pregnancy is healthy, how large the baby is or whether someone has done anything wrong. They are not contagious.

Apply a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser when skin feels dry and keep nails short if itching leads to scratching. Loose, breathable clothing can reduce rubbing. No cream can reliably prevent or erase pregnancy stretch marks. Avoid starting retinoid products during pregnancy, and check any medicated cream with your maternity clinician. Cosmetic procedures are generally considered after pregnancy and breastfeeding, when a dermatologist can assess the settled marks and discuss appropriate options.

Contact your maternity team for intense itching, especially on the palms or soles, itching that disrupts sleep, a widespread rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or feeling unwell. Seek advice if marks are painful, blistered, oozing or associated with fever. These symptoms are not explained by ordinary stretch marks and may need prompt evaluation.

Ask which moisturisers are suitable for your skin, whether a new cream contains a retinoid, and what symptoms should prompt same-day contact. After delivery, ask when cosmetic treatment would be appropriate if the marks remain bothersome.
