What should you know about stress swollen lips?

Lip swelling can follow a new food, medicine, cosmetic, dental product, insect sting, infection, or physical irritation. Stress itself does not prove the cause; rubbing, lip biting, or flare-ups of an underlying sensitivity may happen during tense periods. Swelling may affect one area or both lips and can occur with itching, hives, tingling, or facial swelling.

Keep a note of timing, exposures, accompanying rash, and whether the swelling is increasing. If the episode is mild but unexplained or repeats, arrange medical review so possible triggers can be assessed.

Call emergency services immediately if lip swelling comes with tongue or throat swelling, trouble breathing, wheezing, difficulty swallowing, voice change, dizziness, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives.
